Once you arrive at Dalaman Airport, it’s convenient and easy to pick up your rental car straight from the arrivals hall. There are a number of international companies offering car hire, including Avis and Europcar, as well as local companies such as Garenta.

Hire a car and drive to the pretty fishing village of Dalyan to immerse yourself in a mud or thermal bath, said to cure everything from skin troubles to stomach ailments. The nearby Iztuzu beach is also a great spot to catch sight of endangered loggerhead turtles, which are heavily protected in the area – visit between May and October to catch the turtles during their nesting season on the beach.

For a longer day trip, take the three-hour drive to the ancient city of Hierapolis in Pamukkale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is remarkably intact. Visitors can get a first-hand insight into the fascinating ruins that were once a thermal spa and a theatre.

You must be at least 21 years old to hire a car and have held your licence for a minimum of one year. If you’re between 21 and 25 years old, many car rental companies will apply a surcharge.

1. Unlike in the UK, traffic on a roundabout does not have the right of way. This means that when you are going around a roundabout, you need to stop for cars that are trying to get on. This can be confusing to UK drivers and may take a day or two to get used to!
2. Speed limits are enforced – even if you don’t see a speed limit sign. The speed limit for urban areas is 50km/h, rural areas 90km/h and motorways 120km/h.
3. The roads are good in the cities, but expect gravel roads in rural areas – these can sometimes be poorly maintained.
