You can collect your hire car in the city from several places, including Enterprise Car & Van Hire Dunfermline – approximately a 20-minute walk or a short taxi ride from the train station – and Gibbs Vehicle Hire in the east of the city.

Nearby in Rosyth, just south of Dunfermline, there’s Ace Car & Van Hire, while in Edinburgh there are plenty more options, including Europcar, Enterprise, Hertz and Sixt. Outside of Dunfermline, hop in your hire car to explore Fife at your own leisure. A highlight is the scenic 77-mile Fife Coastal Route, which starts at Kincardine Bridge and ends at the Tay Bridge to Dundee.

Join the route at North Queensferry, roughly 15 minutes outside of Dunfermline’s city centre, and make a stop at North Queensferry Railway Station’s Forth Bridge Heritage Centre to learn more about the iconic structure.

Driving along the coastal A921, drop in at one of the oldest standing castles in Scotland, Aberdour Castle, with a history that goes back as far as the 1200s. The remainder of the coastal route, along a series of A roads, passes tiny fishing villages with views of the North Sea to your right.

Stop for fish and chips at the Anstruther Fish Bar before you reach St Andrews, the so-called spiritual home of golf. From Dundee, it’s an hour back to Dunfermline along the A92 and M90.
