Officially named a city in 2022, Dunfermline is a destination steeped in history, with a rich medieval and industrial past that you can discover at Dunfermline Palace and Abbey and at the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum.

Located around 40 minutes northwest of Edinburgh in the Kingdom of Fife, Dunfermline is not only a lovely staycation destination, but also a convenient gateway to other Scottish gems.

Outside of Dunfermline, hop in your hire car to explore Fife at your own leisure. A highlight is the scenic 124km (77 miles) Fife Coastal Route, which starts at Kincardine Bridge and ends at the Tay Bridge to Dundee.

Join the route at North Queensferry, roughly 15 minutes outside of Dunfermline’s city centre, and make a stop at the Forth Bridge Heritage Centre to learn more about the iconic structure.

Driving along the coastal A921, you can drop in at one of the oldest standing castles in Scotland – Aberdour Castle – with an impressive history that stretches back to the 1200s. A series of A roads make up the remainder of the coastal route, where you’ll pass tiny fishing villages with glittering views of the North Sea to your right.

Stop for fish and chips at the Anstruther Fish Bar before you reach St Andrews, the so-called spiritual home of golf. From Dundee, it’s an hour back to Dunfermline along the A92 and M90.
