Why go to Halkidiki

Relax on pine-fringed beaches and glimpse medieval monasteries on holidays in Halkidiki. Its three peninsulas plunge into the turquoise Aegean, south of Thessaloniki in northern Greece, and make for one of the great unspoilt areas of Greek coastline.

With a choice of areas to visit, you'll be sure to find a resort that works well for your perfect Greek beach holiday...

To the west is Kassandra with its characterful stone towns, child-friendly resorts and white-sand beaches. Middle finger Sithonia is greener, hillier and less developed. The secretive monastic republic of Mount Athos perches on the eastern peninsula.

Reached via the airport of Thessaloniki (SZG), Halkidiki is within easy reach and the transfer is effortless thanks to a choice of connections. Golden sands and calm, azure waters make this area very popular, especially with families who appreciate the universal appeal of building sandcastles, swimming and relaxing in the sun. And whether you are looking for a cheap holiday to the region or an all-inclusive holiday to Halkidiki there is much to choose from.

For something a little more active, there are plenty of opportunities to try a variety of water sports or to explore the lush surroundings by leisurely horseback.

For shopping opportunities as well as some excellent museums and art galleries, visit the nearby city of Thessaloniki which is a fascinating place to wander around, taking in the history and architecture of Greece's second city. Thessaloniki is youthful and exhilarating and truly comes to life after dark with a buzzing nightlife and exciting vibe.

When to go to Halkidiki

While scheduled flights operate year round, it is the summer season from May to October when holidays to the beaches are at their best...

Resorts like Kripiogo, Sani, Polichrono, Chanioti and Pefkohori are typically busy for much of the year, with peak times naturally around the warmest periods. The climate in Greece is generally temperate with mild winters and hot, dry summers. As a year-round destination, Halkidiki benefits from plenty of sunshine and little rainfall.

Holidays to this area are pleasurable at any time of the year, but temperatures are highest in June, July and August, making it ideal for a sunny summer break to coincide with the school holiday season.

What to do in Halkidiki

When you are not enjoying the many beach based activities, you can indulge in local festivals and culture...

To indulge in a little local culture, the popular hotspot of Kallithea hosts a three-day festival in July centred on folklore, sports and various exhibitions. The month of August is dedicated to a festival of traditional music, singing and dancing, which takes place in Polygiros and attracts top artists and musicians.

Another good option for immersion in local culture is the Byzantine Tower Festival, which occurs between July and September. Including art exhibitions, concerts and theatre productions, the event takes place in Palaiologos Tower near Fokaia.

With a wealth of glorious beaches, charming villages, and activities from bird watching to boat trips, there is much to do...

Halkidiki is the ultimate family holiday destination, appealing to everyone thanks to its friendly and welcoming atmosphere and stunning natural scenery.

Grown-up families: Chill on the sandy beach or tear across the water jet-skiing in Kallithea. After a hard day in the sun, head out to lively local tavernas and bars.

Alternatively why not take a trip to the intriguing Cave of Petralona, adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, is a great day out for families. To learn more about the numerous fossils discovered within the cave, visit the anthropological museum located next door.

Relaxing: Seeking divine inspiration? Sail around the coast of holy Mount Athos, ruled by 1700 black-robed monks. You can't step ashore, but a boat trip gives you close-ups of some 20 medieval monasteries clinging to forested cliffs. The site is UNESCO World Heritage Site based around its ancient and sacred monastery, which has been significant since Byzantine times. Situated in a beautiful tranquil location, admission is strictly limited but a boat trip can provide spectacular views of the site as well as great photo opportunities.

Romance: Meander through cobbled alleys perfumed with flowers in Afitos. As the sun goes down, candles flicker in family-run tavernas on the village square - perfect for an intimate dinner. Wander hand in hand through the nearby city of Thessaloniki. You'll find numerous shops where you can treat your other half before enjoying an intimate meal in one of the bustling city's many restaurants.
