There are almost 200 different ski resorts in France, from large to small. Between them they offer thousands of kilometres of pistes...
Whether you are a skier or a snowboarder, France caters well for all types of winter sports lover, from beginners to advanced. You could be enjoying fresh powder in tree-lined runs or heading up onto the many glaciers to enjoy your sport. Those who are more proficient will enjoy the freestyle parks in many resort areas and for the most proficient of all there are many opportunities for off-piste skiing as well.
All resorts have excellent ski lifts and many have been linked into super resort areas, giving you a huge range of areas to ski and snowboard across with just one pass. Check each resort for more information.
Due to the way that many resorts have been built, you are able to ski from the door of your apartment complex or hotel. This means you spend less time getting around and more time on the slopes, and with some of the shortest transfer times from the region's airports those precious hours add up to give you more snow time.
A downside of skiing in France is that many of the resorts are, to be frank, a little ugly. Modern builds have bloomed throughout the French Alps and have not always been built with the most sensitive look; however the mountains and scenery make up for the unforgiving architecture. Head to resorts such as La Clusaz or Serre Chevalier if you want more of a traditional mountain village feel.
Much of the accommodation is in self-catering apartments, giving you the chance to cook on a budget or to get out and enjoy the fantastic French cuisine, including regional specialties such as fondue, raclette and tartiflette, a hearty cheesy potato bake, perfect after a day on the slopes.
