Why go to Johannesburg

Located inland, in the north-east of this vast nation, Johannesburg is the country’s largest city by population and also one of the world's largest.

Choose holidays in Johannesburg to experience one of the most vibrant cities in South Africa...

Johannesburg holidays offer more than just interesting facts, though. Known as Jo'Burg, this modern and exciting city allows holidaymakers to see an Africa that once was, as well as a present-day Africa and an Africa looking towards the future. Add that to a host of cultural attractions and you have a fascinating holiday mix.

The city features skyscrapers that reach for the vast blue skies and stand next to shantytowns such as Soweto. There are colonial buildings from the Victorian and Edwardian eras and flashy mansions in the posh suburbs.

Visitors arrive into Johannesburg at Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport (JNB) following a flight time of around 11 hours from the UK.

Families, groups and couples will all find something to do and see in this vivacious city, where accommodation ranges from low-budget to high-end luxury hotels.

The city's Art Gallery houses important African work, while the Botanic Garden provides a cool respite from the heat of the day. Lesedi Cultural Village is another destination for anyone wishing to delve deeper into African culture and tradition.

The kids will love the 200-acre Johannesburg Zoo, though if you want to see African wildlife on a really big scale, trips can be organised to take a safari at Kruger National Park. You'd have to allow a few days out of your time in Johannesburg, but it's well worth it if you're a wildlife lover.

A little closer to Johannesburg is the green city of Pretoria, which, at less than an hour away, is a worthwhile trip. The city is also a gateway to the rest of South Africa with fast and frequent connections to Cape Town and the Garden Route, Port Elizabeth, George, East London and Durban for the Indian Ocean and Kwazulu Natal.

There's plenty to see and do in exciting Johannesburg. Read our useful information and then use the search tool on TravelSupermarket to find holidays to Johannesburg.

When to go to Johannesburg

Take a Johannesburg holiday at any time to appreciate the cultural highlights of this South African beauty...

Johannesburg is in the southern hemisphere so winter is June to August, while summer is November until February. Temperatures average 25C in December and 19C in July. Rainfall is highest in December and January, with hardly any between May and August.

Cheap Johannesburg package holidays are available year round, though many visitors avoid the rainiest months. The southern-hemisphere winter is a great time to travel if you plan to go on safari: the lack of rain means that animals are easy to spot near water holes and there’s less foliage to block your view!

What to do in Johannesburg
