Located inland, in the north-east of this vast nation, Johannesburg is the country’s largest city by population and also one of the world's largest.
Choose holidays in Johannesburg to experience one of the most vibrant cities in South Africa...
Johannesburg holidays offer more than just interesting facts, though. Known as Jo'Burg, this modern and exciting city allows holidaymakers to see an Africa that once was, as well as a present-day Africa and an Africa looking towards the future. Add that to a host of cultural attractions and you have a fascinating holiday mix.
The city features skyscrapers that reach for the vast blue skies and stand next to shantytowns such as Soweto. There are colonial buildings from the Victorian and Edwardian eras and flashy mansions in the posh suburbs.
Visitors arrive into Johannesburg at Oliver Reginald Tambo International Airport (JNB) following a flight time of around 11 hours from the UK.
Families, groups and couples will all find something to do and see in this vivacious city, where accommodation ranges from low-budget to high-end luxury hotels.
The city's Art Gallery houses important African work, while the Botanic Garden provides a cool respite from the heat of the day. Lesedi Cultural Village is another destination for anyone wishing to delve deeper into African culture and tradition.
The kids will love the 200-acre Johannesburg Zoo, though if you want to see African wildlife on a really big scale, trips can be organised to take a safari at Kruger National Park. You'd have to allow a few days out of your time in Johannesburg, but it's well worth it if you're a wildlife lover.
A little closer to Johannesburg is the green city of Pretoria, which, at less than an hour away, is a worthwhile trip. The city is also a gateway to the rest of South Africa with fast and frequent connections to Cape Town and the Garden Route, Port Elizabeth, George, East London and Durban for the Indian Ocean and Kwazulu Natal.
There's plenty to see and do in exciting Johannesburg. Read our useful information and then use the search tool on TravelSupermarket to find holidays to Johannesburg.
Take a Johannesburg holiday at any time to appreciate the cultural highlights of this South African beauty...
Johannesburg is in the southern hemisphere so winter is June to August, while summer is November until February. Temperatures average 25C in December and 19C in July. Rainfall is highest in December and January, with hardly any between May and August.
Cheap Johannesburg package holidays are available year round, though many visitors avoid the rainiest months. The southern-hemisphere winter is a great time to travel if you plan to go on safari: the lack of rain means that animals are easy to spot near water holes and there’s less foliage to block your view!
Johannesburg dances to an entirely different beat than its South African sisters. Join in the fun and make cherished holiday memories...
Joy of Jazz Festival; August: Held in the Newtown precinct, this celebrated jazz fest brings together some of South Africa's best performers with international artists. The city is alive with the swinging sound of jazz.
Jo’burg Art Fair; September: Art of all types is on show during this annual event, which is held at the Sandton Convention Centre. This is one not to be missed for lovers of art.
Arts Alive; September: A vibrant and accessible event, where music, dance, comedy, poetry and theatre come alive at venues around Johannesburg. There are many free events to enjoy.
South Africa is a great holiday destination, whatever your interests. Find out what to do in and around Johannesburg...
Kids and teens: Pleasures of a more modern variety can be had at Gold Reef City theme park and casino, which the whole family can enjoy. The purpose-built entertainment complex of Sun City is less than three hours away, and families might want to consider a twin-centre holiday to enjoy the man-made beaches, ocean and full-on entertainment at Sun City.
Grown-up families: The Apartheid Museum is one not to miss for anyone interested in the rise and fall of apartheid. It's an insightful and harrowing look at this period of African and world history.
Shopping: Shoppers will be in paradise in Johannesburg. There’s a range of excellent shopping at places around the city, though the Mall of Rosebank and Sandton City also draw shoppers. Expect luxury boutiques and international chains at these temples to spending.

We compare millions of holidays from the UK’s leading travel companies
TravelSupermarket is a price-comparison site for all things holiday related. To make sure you don’t pay a penny too much for a getaway, we scan holiday prices from the UK’s most trusted travel brands. Simply run a holiday search and we will allow you to compare deals from multiple companies in one place.
Once you’ve found the best deal for you, TravelSupermarket will direct you to your chosen company to book. As we don’t take bookings or sell anything ourselves, we remain impartial and focused on helping you to find the best price.
Our customers save an average of £350 per holiday by comparing deals on TravelSupermarket.*
As well as holidays, TravelSupermarket allows you to compare the best deals from car hire companies, low-cost and charter airlines, hotel and other accommodation sites, plus travel extras from airport parking and airport lounges to travel insurance and car hire excess insurance.

Every day, TravelSupermarket scans more than two million holiday prices from the UK’s top travel companies, plus deals from over 700 individual car hire providers from more than 20 suppliers.
We update these prices every two hours. However, due to supply and demand, the price of holidays and car hire may have changed when you click through. Always confirm the price with the company you are booking with.
Holiday prices do not include tourist tax so make sure you know what and how much this is. Check whether extras such as hold luggage and transfers from the airport are included, too, if they are important to you.
All of the travel companies on TravelSupermarket that sell package holidays including flights provide financial protection through the ATOL scheme. Once you’ve booked, you should receive an ATOL certificate from the company you booked with.
If your package holiday doesn’t include a flight, protection will be provided by ABTA or the Travel Trust Association.
Before you go on holiday, it’s sensible to check the latest travel advice about the country you are travelling to, paying attention to entry requirements and any safety concerns. Check the latest advice from the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and read its Travel Aware advice.
