Why go to Lloret de Mar

Lloret de Mar holidays are kissed by the sun and full of fun. The charming town on the Costa Brava began welcoming international visitors back in the 1950s – and it hasn’t looked back. Today, it’s a lively resort that draws holidaymakers in search of sun, sand and a great night out.

Lloret de Mar holidays cater to all types of traveller, from party people looking for a cheap break to families seeking sunny days and entertaining evenings. Go down the self-catering route to keep things cheap, choose a hotel with options to dine in, or enjoy a hassle-free, all-inclusive package.

Wherever you stay, you’ll likely be near one of the town’s main beaches. A dip into the surrounding azure sea is hard to resist, but if you prefer to stay dry, spend your time lounging on wide swathes of white sand or exploring the pretty coves. Along the palm tree-lined promenade of Lloret Beach, you’ll find bars and restaurants with views out to the rocky headland.

Fancy a break from the beach? Lloret de Mar’s other attractions range from historical sights to modern amusement parks. You could admire the Modernist architecture in its stunning cemetery in the morning, then whizz down water slides in the afternoon.

The town is also well positioned to explore nearby cities. Girona, with its treasure trove of museums and medieval architecture, is around a 30-minute drive away. It’s also only an hour to Barcelona, where a daytrip can pack in cultural sights, shopping and world-class dining.

If you do venture out, make sure you’re back in town by sunset – after dark, Lloret de Mar becomes the Costa Brava’s most renowned party town. A huge range of bars and clubs form the ultimate crawl, with British pubs pulling pints and classy cocktail establishments playing disco tunes until dawn.

When to go to Lloret de Mar

Lloret de Mar is busiest in July and August, when long sunny days lure many holidaymakers to its shores. It can get hot, with average highs of around 29C, but even on the hottest days, a gentle sea breeze cools things down.

The temperature dips sharply in winter, and from November to February, you can expect averages below 10C. This is the best time to pick up a cheap holiday to Lloret de Mar, as well as avoid the crowds. The payoff is colder days, more chance of rain and less going on: the amusement parks close for winter and some bars and restaurants around the promenade do, too.

A good compromise is to visit in June or September. Temperatures are usually in the 20s and you can bask in around 10 hours of sunshine a day. Holiday prices will also be slightly cheaper than at the height of summer.

What to do in Lloret de Mar

The beaches are the obvious draw in Lloret de Mar, but just as exciting are the parks filled with rides and slides, the beautiful greenery, and the town’s extravagant cemetery. If you have a day to spare, a trip to the walled city of Girona is a must.

Modernist cemetery

Lloret de Mar’s Modernist cemetery can feel more like an art gallery than a resting place, with fine examples of the unique Catalan Modernist movement, in the form of elaborate tombs, crypts and mausoleums, throughout.

Renowned architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, whose celebrated work can be found throughout Catalonia, has even designed monuments in the cemetery. Stroll peacefully through the grounds and appreciate the designs of angels and dragons, ornate floral carvings and intricate headstones.

Beaches

Lloret de Mar’s beaches range from rocky coves ideal for fishing and snorkelling to sheltered stretches of sand with calm waters. Lloret Beach, nearly one-mile long, is the largest in town, with umbrellas, jet skis and more available for hire.

Fenals Beach, just south of the town centre, has a chilled, less touristy atmosphere. In a sheltered bay, you’ll find restaurants at one end of the beach and a canopy of pine trees at the other.

Amusement parks

Kids are well catered for at the two amusement parks near Lloret de Mar. Water World waterpark is open from the end of May to the end of September and a free bus is available from town. Check out the family-friendly wave pool and rafting river or brave the hair-raising X-Treme Mountain and Kamikaces.

Little ones will love Gnomo Park, an outdoor adventure park for kids up to 12 just outside town. There are climbing areas and crafts for the youngest adventurers, plus an assault course for bigger kids.

Santa Clotilde Gardens

Perched on a clifftop near Fenals Beach, these landscaped gardens are a lovely way to spend an hour or two.

Designed in the 1920s in the Italian Renaissance style, the tranquil green space is a calm oasis away from the bustling town centre. Inside, you’ll find impressive marble statues of mermaids, pointed cypress trees and perfectly manicured hedges. Stop at the top of its staircase for a spectacular view of the dazzling Mediterranean Sea.

Girona

Girona is a beguiling city around a half-hour drive north of Lloret de Mar. The labyrinth of cobble-stoned lanes in the medieval old town is a highlight, where you’ll also find Gothic churches, galleries and museums. Walk along the medieval walls for views of the city and the Pyrenees mountain range in the distance.

On the River Onyar, which separates the old and new sides of the city, you’ll see the postcard image of Girona – brightly coloured houses reflected in the gentle water.
