Why go?

People will often stop by Ancona on the way to somewhere else. Don’t allow yourself to miss the opportunity to see authentic Italy...

Ancona is a city and seaport in Italy situated 170 miles north-east of Rome and 125 miles south-east of Bologna. Ancona is a good example of real Italy, fairly unspoilt by mass tourism. Car rental in Ancona is the easiest way to travel and gives you the freedom to enjoy the sights without feeling restricted by time or the cost of other methods of travel.

Most of Ancona's medieval centre was bombed during the last world war and has been slowly rebuilt over the years. Some of the old town remains and, alongside it, from the ashes of battle, a vibrant city was born with plenty of attractions to welcome visitors to this pleasant corner of Italy.

Ancona Cathedral is one of the most attractive pieces of the past to have survived the war. The impressive white-stone building displays much of the architecture that would have dominated the Ancona of old. The cathedral, however, is set on the mountain overlooking Ancona and well worth paying a visit if you have a rental car booked.

There are lots of tourist attractions in and around Ancona so it is wise to research your options for car hire in Ancona before your trip. Obtaining cheap car hire in Ancona is widely available if you book in advance, and when you collect your Ancona car hire at the airport you will be in an ideal location to begin exploring Italy.

Where to explore?

Ancona has a few local attractions, but the beauty of this place is its location. It’s a great base to tour from...

There is never really a bad season to visit Ancona. July and August are the hottest months so make the most of exploring the countryside and beaches then. Make sure you have a hire car arranged so you can reach some of the more secluded places independently.

It is important to organise a hire car to enjoy exploring surrounding areas such as Monte Conero, which is set on the coastline that extends from Venice to Pescara with many flat sandy beaches. The Conero Peninsula is just a 30-minute drive to the south-east of Ancona. The journey will be rewarded with stunning and quiet white sand bays.

A few minutes further on from the beaches of Conero you will encounter the unspoilt beauty of the town of Loreto. Its remarkable architecture frames each of its pleasant squares and makes an ideal lunch stop.

Less than an hour’s drive to the south-west of Ancona lie the Frasassi Caves. Despite only being discovered in the 1970s, it is one of the largest cave systems in Europe. You can enjoy a guided tour in the impressive chambers, some of which have ceilings up to 240 metres high, while illuminated underground lakes draw the eye downwards.
