Plumping for car hire in Sorrento is a canny way to ensure you see as much as possible – from pootling along the Amalfi Coast and its heavenly hills and towns, to vrooming north towards Mount Vesuvius and the eerily-preserved villages it so famously covered in ash.
There are two options: picking up a car in Naples as soon as you land, or the cheaper option of getting to Sorrento, ferrying over to Capri for a day or two, and then renting a vehicle for your remaining time.
Language: Italian | Currency: Euros (€) | Avg. Flight time: 2 hrs 35 mins (Naples)
Naples Airport is one of Italy’s busiest hubs so, as you’d expect, it houses ample options for Sorrento car hire. All the usual suspects have an office here, and there’s a devoted centre served by shuttle buses from the P5 car park. To uncover the deals that ensure the cheapest Sorrento stays, use TravelSupermarket to book in advance.
Alternatively, if you’re arriving in Naples by train, there are car hire outlets all around town, including by Napoli Centrale station.
From Naples' tangenziale (ring road), drive south towards the Sorrento peninsula down the A3 autoroute – paying the toll – then veer west along the SS14 by Pompeii. The latter is a busy road, so be prepared for some traffic, and to be on the road for 90 minutes.
As vehicles are only permitted between November and April, and given that – due to excellent buses and the isle’s small size – you won’t need a car anyway, it makes sense to sort car rental in Sorrento after you’ve been to Capri.
Europcar, Budget, Avis and Hertz all have offices for car rental in Sorrento itself, and all allow return at Naples’ airport, should you desire.
With so many agencies vying for supremacy, finding competitive, cheap car hire in Sorrento shouldn’t be a problem. Sorrento’s cheapest rates are available in winter or the shoulder seasons (May to June and September to October).
There’s further good news for those looking to keep things cheap too: all the local roads are excellent, so you won’t need a costlier 4x4. A decent Fiat should do the (Italian) job!
A fair fuel policy (also known as full-to-full or same-to-same) means you’ll only pay for the fuel you use. All car rental deals compared on TravelSupermarket come with a fair fuel policy, so you can book your hire car safe in the knowledge there will be no nasty surprises at drop-off. More information on TravelSupermarket’s commitment to fair fuel policies can be found here.
All rental deals compared on TravelSupermarket include mandatory fees (for example, one-way and young driver surcharges) in your rental quote at the time of booking, meaning you’ll know the full price of your car hire upfront.
