For adrenaline junkies, the Six Flags Over Georgia theme park has a range of fun rides for the whole family, and is around a 15-minute drive west of the city centre. It can take an hour and a half to get here by public transport from central Atlanta, so you’re already way ahead of the crowds because you’ve booked a hire car.
On the outskirts of the city is Stone Mountain Park – easily reached with a car hire (it’s a 35-minute drive north-east of central Atlanta). The centrepiece of the park is a giant hill of granite into which are carved three figures on horseback of the Confederate States of America.
A little way north-west of Atlanta is an area known as Historic High Country. Leave the skyscrapers behind and in just half an hour you could be touring villages where tales of the past bulge from every seam. History and romance walk hand in hand along these sun-dappled streets.
