Weston-Super-Mare is a large, traditional British seaside resort close to Bristol and Bath in Somerset.
A fantastic family destination, Weston-Super-Mare has all the ingredients required of a tasty trip to the seaside…
Whilst having all the old-fashioned fun of the traditional British coastal holiday, such as donkey rides, ice-cream parlours and the Grand Pier with its attractions, it also has a surprising number of special annual and seasonal events that make it an excellent destination for all types of holidaymaker.
Stay in one of the many local B&Bs and small hotels in the town if you wish to get as close to the seafront as possible…
From there you will be in close vicinity to the beautiful beaches. Here, you will find big wide sands on the low tide on the Bristol Channel, as well as popular spots like the Seaquarium, The Winter Gardens Theatre, the Grand Pier and all the other seafront attractions.
Weston-Super-Mare hotels are often smaller family-run places, although there are budget chain hotels, such as Travelodge and Premier Inn, in the area. Larger chains can be found in Bristol and Bath, just a short distance away.
Moving away from the seafront slightly, you can enjoy visits to the Helicopter Museum, which is the largest dedicated helicopter museum in the world, and the North Somerset Museum, where you will find a wealth of historical artefacts as well as the chance to view one of the many art gallery exhibitions, which run throughout the year. The Helicopter Museum also organises an annual event called "International HeliDays" in July, when upwards of 75 helicopters descend over the beach for an air display. Be sure to book your hotel in advance for events like this, as demand will be high. If a helicopter is a bit too spine-tingling for your tastes, why not try the 40m high Weston Wheel, with views over to the Welsh coast?
If something a little more grounded suits, you can take boat trips on the channel or enjoy the Marine Lake. Of course, for the kids you simply have to visit the recently refurbished Grand Pier, with its indoor funfair rides and games. Motorbike enthusiasts should aim for a stay on a Thursday night in the summer months, when they can enjoy the "Weston Bike Nights" meetings, organised by the Royal British Legion.
Again, expect hotels to fill up more on these dates. Of course, if it's the simpler things you are looking for, Weston-Super-Mare has a number of well-marked nature walks and trails that take in the natural beauty of the area, through the quiet Sand Bay or the indigenous, unspoilt woodlands.
For those driving to Weston-Super-Mare, it is worth remembering that there is also plenty to do just outside of the central area. If you can, get out of town and visit the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton, and Bristol for its museums, galleries and inland harbour, as well as the Bristol Suspension Bridge. The Roman Baths in Bath are also well worth your time.
Hotels in Weston-Super-Mare can be found nearer the edge of town, if you are looking to explore the surrounding areas whilst you are nearby. If travelling from further afield, Bristol International Airport is just 20 miles away.
Expect masses of family fun in this bustling coastal resort…
