Up the road from Birmingham, in the county of Staffordshire, Tamworth is a historic market town best known for Tamworth Castle and Statfold Country Park (and its steam locomotives).

As for the main attractions, the M42 and M40 will take you south to Warwick Castle, which is a superb day trip from Tamworth. Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon, is also southward. Here you can catch one of Bard’s plays at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and learn more about his early romance with his wife Anne Hathaway at her family cottage. Royal Leamington Spa is another pretty stop-off point, just off the M40.

Alternatively, head north from Tamworth on the A5192 and A51 to Cannock Chase, a designated Area of Natural Beauty. Here you can stop off for forest walks and cycling – or simply enjoy the views as you cruise through in your hire car. The area is also home to the National Trust’s Shugborough Hall, where you'll find gardens, a play area, history and art.

Famous theme park Alton Towers is also within easy reach from Tamworth – you’re about an hour’s drive from rides like Rita, Oblivion and Galactica.
