Why go to PortAventura

If you’re after non-stop fun, make a beeline for one of the Costa Dorada’s most action-packed resorts, PortAventura. Home to two theme parks, a Caribbean-inspired waterpark and an eclectic mix of hotels, a PortAventura holiday is sure to keep the whole family entertained.

Located outside the buzzing beach resort of Salou, PortAventura World is the ideal family holiday destination – and one that is especially popular during the school break.

The original theme park, PortAventura Park, is still a major attraction. It’s made up of six zones, five of which transport you to different destinations and periods of time, including Imperial China and the American Far West. The sixth zone transports you to the magical world of Sesame Street.

For little Lewis Hamiltons – and older ones too – Ferrari Land is the place to be. Here you’ll find Red Force, the tallest rollercoaster in Europe, an interactive gallery and, among other attractions and experiences, a gift shop where you can treat yourself to a wide range of Ferrari-emblazoned paraphernalia.

Keen to splash around? Head Caribe Aquatic Park, Caribbean-themed waterpark. Here you can race on the intertwined slides of Mambo Limbo, ride the turbulent tubes of El Tifón or become the King Khajuna in the park's key attraction – a mega 31m drop slide.

The entertainment continues into the evening too, with the PortAventura Parade transforming the park into a colourful carnival. If you’re knackered after a long day of fun, you can unwind back in your hotel or dine out at one of the resort’s many restaurants and bars instead.

When to go to PortAventura

Like much of southern Spain, PortAventura is blessed with long balmy summers, short mild winters and pleasantly warm shoulder seasons. Peak season runs from June to August when temperatures regularly reach 30C and higher. It's also the busiest time in the theme parks as it coincides with European school holidays and high tourist season on the Costa Dorada.

For a cheap PortAventura holiday, visit in the cooler months of November, December and January, when the theme parks open on the weekends and on select dates during the holidays. Although the mercury drops to around 12C, and there's a higher chance of the odd rain shower, you will benefit from much shorter queues for the rides. Keep in mind that the theme parks are generally closed throughout February and much of March, and Caribe Aquatic generally stays closed over winter. Check the official site for opening times before you book.

For the best weather and the least crowds, visit during the shoulder seasons – April, May, September and October see temperatures hover between a comfortable 20C and 23C.

What to do in PortAventura

From thrill rides and waterslides to street parades and shows, there's never a dull moment on a PortAventura holiday. Ride the mega-coasters in the two theme parks or kick back on a Caribbean-style beach in Caribe Aquatic – with so much choice, no two days have to be the same.

PortAventura Park

You can travel around the world and through time in a single day at PortAventura Park – just pay a visit to each of the six distinct zones. Experiences range from chilled-out boat rides to classic white-knuckle coasters, with highlights including an old school steam train and a Mayan-themed maze.

Each zone also has its own theatre or stage area, where live shows are held throughout the day.

Sésamo Aventura

This Sesame Street-themed zone, which you’ll find within PortAventura Park, is perfect for young families.

Designed for kids under eight, there’s a range of low-thrill rides including Grover's Coco Piloto, where you fly above the park in a plane; Tami Tami, a rollercoaster that is aimed at junior thrill-seekers; and La Granja de Elmo, a gentle train ride through Elmo's farm. There's also a soft play area and daily shows featuring Sesame Street characters.

Ferrari Land

From rollercoasters and drop rides to a virtual F1 race, Ferrari Land is jam-packed with hair-raising, automotive-inspired attractions. After braving the superfast Red Force, go free-fall on the Thrill Towers. Alternatively, take part in the Maranello Grand Race, a 570m racetrack where you can test out your racing skills.

Other highlights include the Ferrari Experience, an interactive journey through the history of the legendary Italian Scuderia; and Flying Dreams, a virtual reality ride that lets you experience the muscle of a Ferrari GT.

PortAventura Parade

Held every evening in the Mediterrània zone, the PortAventura Parade is a treat for all the senses. Expect music and dancing, glowing lights, flamboyant costumes, and, best of all, larger than life floats that look like they’ve come straight from the (animated) set of Wacky Races! It’s quite the extravaganza.

PortAventura Caribe Aquatic Park

After fun-filled days at the two main theme parks, spend a day or two cooling off in PortAventura's waterpark. This vast park has 17 different attractions, including the wild river ride El Río Loco, the tempestuous waters of El Torrente, and the twin Barracudas slides, which boast the steepest drops in the waterpark.

Alternatively, relax to your heart’s content on Bahama Beach. With its sandy shores and gentle lapping waves, it's the ideal place to recharge after an adrenaline-fuelled day.
