Increase in searches since August: 290.3%

Egypt’s rise to #1 on the latest Holiday Hotlist was partly down to a monumental 290% increase in TravelSupermarket searches in September. As holidaymakers turn to winter sun destinations, Egypt, where you can escape to temperatures upwards of 20°C even in December and January, tops the list of the most on-trend getaways right now.

From the famous pyramids of Giza near Cairo to the year-round sun and world-class snorkelling in the Red Sea, this historic country is a treasure trove of unforgettable holidays.

Families flock to Hurghada for its waterparks, boat trips, desert safaris and more, not to mention its spectacular beaches with shallow waters and breathtaking coral reefs. To sample Egypt’s storied past, take a day trip back in time to Luxor, located on the sunny banks of the River Nile and dubbed the world’s largest open-air museum.

Close to Hurghada, El Gouna is one of the most esteemed resorts in Egypt, with tranquil lagoons, idyllic islands and upscale restaurants that contribute to a lively yet premium nightlife scene.

Sharm el Sheikh, Dahab and Marsa Alam are further leading resorts to consider, typified by glorious sandy beaches, year-round sunshine and magical sea life.

2. Agadir, Morocco

Increase in searches since August: 134.2%

Agadir was a new arrival on the Holiday Hotlist this month, with its balmy winters clearly a huge draw for those weighing up a trip to escape the wet and cold. TravelSupermarket searches rose 134% in September, making it the second most on-trend destination right now.

This vibrant North African city is an attractive holiday destination all year round, with scorching hot summers and mild winters that make for a welcome change from the British chill and drizzle. Even in the peak of winter, temperatures still typically hit 20°C.

There are countless swanky hotels overlooking its vast sandy beach that spans for miles, and offering a gorgeous backdrop for affordable all-inclusive holidays.

There’s plenty to do if you’re venturing outside the resort too, from hitting the waves at the nearby surf town of Taghazout, browsing for bargains in the buzzing local souks or exploring the beautiful palm-lined Paradise Valley in the Atlas Mountains.

3. Fuerteventura, Spain

Increase in searches since August: 81%

Fuerteventura is consistently a popular destination, and that is still the case heading into shoulder season as TravelSupermarket searches climbed 81% in September compared to August.

With more than 150 beaches to pick from, you’re spoilt for choice on holidays to Fuerteventura. Whether you’re taking the family to Playa El Castillo, snorkelling at Playa de la Concha or windsurfing at Playa de Sotavento, you’ll be treated to warm temperatures all year round.

Incredible volcanic scenery and wind-sculpted sand dunes provide the backdrop for your days on the beach, while boat trips for dolphin-spotting or visiting the uninhabited Isla de Lobos are fantastic activities away from the sand.

4. Las Vegas, USA

Increase in searches since August: 73.9%

While not a typical winter sun escape for Brits, Las Vegas holidays are trending on TravelSupermarket right now, with searches up nearly 74% in September compared to August.

Vegas needs little introduction as a holiday destination, with its neon-lit strip a hotbed of flashy nightclubs and vast casinos where fortunes are staked. Trips here are for those seeking thrills rather than peace and quiet.

Unsurprisingly, Sin City has an array of hotels to pick from, ranging from the swankiest of penthouse suites to outrageous themed resorts with their own casinos. If you’ve had your fill of gambling and partying, the strikingly bleak Death Valley and the iconic Grand Canyon are just a few hours’ drive away.

5. Malta

Increase in searches since August: 44.7%

Malta is leading the way when it comes to the cheapest beach holiday destinations right now, and it’s one of the most on-trend getaways too. #2 on the October Holiday Hotlist, TravelSupermarket searches spiked nearly 45%.

Its ancient history, dramatically rugged coastline and impossibly clear waters make it a genuinely unique European beach holiday destination. To the north-east of the island, Qawra has a plethora of stylish hotels and is a popular spot for an all-inclusive holiday. Mellieħa, where you’ll find one of only a few sandy beaches, is a family favourite along with Buġibba, which has an equally appealing artificial beach.

Evenings here can be spent exploring the UNESCO-listed capital city of Valletta, a labyrinth of golden alleys and architectural marvels, or the lively nightlife hub of St Julian's.

The slow-paced, neighbouring island of Gozo is worth considering for a truly tranquil break, with its scenic oceanside trails, megalithic temples and rocky coves.

6. Cancun, Mexico

Increase in searches since August: 31.2%

A second long-haul escape to make the list of trending holiday destinations at the moment, Cancun was tickling the fancy of TravelSupermarket users in September as searches rose over 31% compared to August.

This tropical paradise, situated on southern Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, allures holidaymakers with its ice-white, powder-soft beaches that give way to the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea.

While famed for its raucous party scene, it’s not all superclubs and beach bars. The Hotel Zone is an oasis away from the revelry and has a wealth of world-class resorts to pick from. When you’re not being pampered in a stylish spa or dining on delectable dishes, there are ancient Mayan ruins and hidden rainforest cenotes to explore nearby, as well as underwater reefs teeming with marine life.
