La Savina, a port village on the island of Formentera, is your gateway to what is arguably the quietest and most laidback of the Balearic Islands.
If you’re keen on exploring this tiny island at your own pace, book a hire car in La Savina to visit San Francesc’s restaurants and boutiques, potter about La Mola's bohemian market and catch a sunset like no other at the Far de Mola lighthouse.
When you arrive on the ferry from Ibiza, you’ll find yourself at the entry point and transport hub of Formentera.
There are a number of car hire companies here where you can compare prices and choose a car that’s perfect for you (which you can do online and in advance, too). They include:
Before you head off in your rental car, it’s worth checking your drop-off and pick-up times with the staff so you’re not caught out.
The main thing to know about driving in Formentera is that the number of cars on the island is restricted during the summer months. If you’re keen on bringing a hire car from Ibiza to the island between June and September, you’ll need to apply for a permit and pay a daily fee. Anyone found without one will face a fine.
It’s highly recommended that you speak to your car hire provider in advance to get the full lowdown on what you need to be aware of for the dates you travel.
In terms of actual driving, remember to drive on the right-hand side and be prepared for some dusty coastal roads. There are a few paved roads too, but no traffic lights. Also, be prepared to come across plenty of scooters and cyclists, which tend to be popular with locals and fellow tourists.
Speed limits are as follows: on the main highway, PM-820, it’s 70km/h (approximately 44 mph), single-level streets, like La Savina promenade, are 20km/hour (approximately 12 mph), and it’s 30km/h (approximately 19 mph) through towns. The drink drive limit is 0.05%.
Any additional requirements: A valid UK driving licence and a second form of ID (eg passport)
