With mornings spent gazing up at Gothic architecture, afternoons perusing museums stuffed with Picassos, evening strolls on leafy cafe-lined boulevards and late nights in lively tapas bars, holidays in Palma mix the vibrancy of a city with the go-slow vibe of a seaside town.
Enjoy history, beaches and fine dining
Despite the Majorcan capital’s small footprint, it manages to pack in a surprising amount of architecture from throughout the centuries, making holidays to Palma a history lesson come to life. The city also boasts high-calibre galleries and museums to rival destinations twice its size.
Outdoorsy types, meanwhile, will love the glorious beaches and mountains to be found on the outskirts of the city. Foodies too will love visiting Palma’s mix of high-end restaurants, casual tapas bars and superb food markets.
Get lost in the city’s labyrinth of old town alleyways, explore the landmark La Seu cathedral and make like the locals with long, sociable lunches of rustic, country-style cooking.
Have the perfect weekend break
Considering it’s a capital city, weekend breaks in Palma can be surprisingly cheap. Short breaks give you the freedom to cherry-pick your flights based on the best prices and Palma’s plethora of tapas bars offering inexpensive plates let you road test some of the best local eats without breaking the bank.
The city’s size also means cheap weekend breaks in Palma offer ample time to explore all of its best bits, without having to splash out on a week’s accommodation.
Bag a budget deal
For really cheap holidays to Palma, consider travelling outside of the high season. Mild weather and lower-priced flights make autumn an ideal time to bag a bargain.
Short breaks can also be even better value if you plump for an all-inclusive Palma holiday. You can tick off your room, meals and flights in one swoop when you go all-inclusive in Palma, leaving the rest of your cash free for hitting the shops on its delightful boulevards.
Although the winter months see occasional rain and the closure of some hotels, bars and restaurants, Palma is more or less a year-round destination. Even in January, it’s not unusual to be able to sit outside without a jacket, and in the ‘off season’ you also get the bonus of having the city’s sights to yourself.
Things really start to heat up in May and by the peak season of July and August the skies are clear, the water’s warm and the weather’s seriously toasty, with highs topping 30C. Prices also shoot up at this time, however, which is why spring and autumn are the ideal times to head to Palma.
Semana Santa processions: To experience a classic Spanish street parade, holidays to Palma are best timed during the last week of Lent, immediately before Easter, when dramatic Semana Santa processions commemorating the Passion of Christ provide quite the spectacle. The iconic Holy Week event sees thousands of members of various brotherhoods don long, flowing robes and take to the streets to carry enormous religious icons up to the cathedral.
