Getting into the city by car is straightforward – take the D20 southwest and then the D941 southeast, which becomes Rue Armand Dutreix as it gets closer to the centre.

Gare de Limoges-Bénédictins (Limoges train station) is the best location for hiring a car in the centre of the city. Here you’ll find Avis and Europcar offices. There are also a handful of rental agencies elsewhere in the city.

Limoges can be a bit tricky to navigate, largely due to a high proportion of one-way streets so consider bringing or renting a sat-nav or a GPS-enabled smartphone to help you get around. The heart of the charming old quarter has a handful of pedestrianised cobbled roads too. As in most cities, traffic can be heavy, and drivers impatient, so keep your wits about you.

There is usually a two-hour limit for on-street parking in Limoges city centre, so if you’re planning on spending a day here, you’re better off heading for one of the many public car parks. One of the most central is at Place de la République.

Oradour-sur-Glane

This once bustling village was stormed by the SS in June 1944 and completely destroyed – what remains of it now has been left as an incredibly moving shrine to the 642 inhabitants who died. The exhibition centre provides context before you move on to explore the haunting ruins.

Rochechouart

Rochechouart is best known for being the site where, two million years ago, a massive meteorite hit the earth – one of the largest ever to do so, at 1.5km in diameter. These days, there’s not much evidence of this left to see here, but it’s a very appealing village with an excellent contemporary art museum.

Lac de Vassivière

Driving time: 1 hour 20 minutes

This man-made lake in the Plateau de Millevaches is a beautiful spot that is popular throughout the year but especially in summer for its watersports. A tranquil island in the middle of the lake can be reached on foot via a bridge and is home to an art centre – many works are set among the trees.

1. The city centre is very compact, so if you’re concerned about driving in the historic quarter it may be worth parking near the station and walking in.
   
2. Parking secret tip: try the Saint Martial mall. It's a short walk from the centre, has 700 spaces, and caps parking at a few euros between 9am and 2pm.
   
3. It’s compulsory to carry a breathalyser in your car in France. Your rental company should provide this, but it’s worth double-checking there’s one in the vehicle before you drive your car away, just to be safe.
