New York City isn't exactly known for being budget-friendly. But for those in the know, there's a magical window in January when the city becomes surprisingly affordable. And a secret travel hack to make it even cheaper.

Here's the deal: right after the holiday crowds clear out, NYC enters what industry insiders call the "dead week" – that quiet period between New Year's and mid-February when tourism hits its annual low. And every year, savvy travellers can take advantage of this lull in a big way.

For Hotel Week (though at nearly six weeks long, we're not sure why they don't call it Hotel Month), more than 120 hotels across the city are offering 25% off their standard rates. From 2 January through 9 February 2025, high-end spots like the Lotte New York Palace and trendy boutique hotels like the Wythe in Brooklyn are all available to book at a steep discount.

But here's where it gets even better: starting 21 January, you can stack these hotel savings with a whole collection of city-wide deals.

Broadway theatres are offering two-for-one tickets to shows, and restaurants across the city, including some typically impossible-to-book spots, roll out special prix-fixe menus that let you experience fine dining at a fraction of the usual cost. Even the city's major attractions and museums get in on the action with their own two-for-one deals, making it the perfect time to check off those bucket-list cultural experiences.

The catch? You need to plan ahead. While hotel bookings are open now, the other deals don't open for booking until 7 January. Mark your calendar if you want to snag the best options.

January is also a top time to visit New York because you get to experience the city like a local. The Christmas tourists have gone home, the New Year's crowd has dispersed and there's a chill vibe that settles over the city. Plus, you might even get some snow, which while it turns the ‘sidewalks’ to slush, also transforms Central Park into a winter wonderland.

On final tip – if you want to max out your bargain hunting, focus on neighbourhoods that usually command premium rates. The deals apply to over 30 neighbourhoods, so you can finally afford that room with a view in Midtown or that hip boutique hotel in SoHo.
