Six epic one-way USA car hire road trips

America’s vast, epic landscape is perfect for road tripping. From the great mountain ranges of the Rockies and the open plains of the Midwest, to the dramatic coastal roads of California and dozens of iconic cities, no other country packs in such variation quite like America.

One-way car hire is the perfect way to cover these incredible distances, giving you the freedom to stop off and explore whenever you please – it’s the perfect excuse for an adventure!

Route 66

One of the original US highways, driving along Route 66 is the ultimate American road trip. Steeped in history and culture, it played a huge role during the 1930s when thousands of American families used it to emigrate west.

The route starts in Chicago and ends in Los Angeles, making it perfect for one-way car hire. In between, you’ll cover over 2,000 miles of pure, unfiltered America, touching sections of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

Along the way, you’ll pass by the mighty Grand Canyon, the vast, sweeping hills of the Ozarks, Native American reservations and some the United States’ most iconic cities. The route was officially decertified in the 80s, with much being overlaid or routed around by broader interstate highways, but you can still “get your kicks” by driving large parts of the original Route 66.

Pacific Highway

A 123-mile route of dramatic sea views, towering, rugged cliffs and gloriously untouched coastline, the Pacific Highway is about as epic as road trips come.

Winding down the coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles, the route is packed with so much to see, you’ll probably spend most of your time stopping to gawp at your surroundings. Must-sees include Hearst Castle, one of the most expensive homes ever built, Santa Barbara wine country, the untamed forests and secret beaches of Big Sur and the Point Lobos State Reserve.

One of the driving highlights has to be Bixby Bridge, a 260-foot high, single-lane bridge which stretches over a yawning gorge for more than 700 feet. This spot is one of the most iconic points on the whole route, so make sure you pull over at the start or end of the bridge to really take it in.

The Great River Road

This route follows the mighty Mississippi from its origins up near Chicago, right down to heady New Orleans, taking in some of America’s greatest musical cities along the way.

Chicago, the home of the blues, kicks off the musical pilgrimage, before the route drops down into Kentucky for some bluegrass and country. Of course, no trip would be complete without a detour to see the King in Memphis – get all shook up in Graceland, Elvis’s eccentric mansion home.

After well over 2,000 miles of epic scenery, the route finishes in the Big Easy, so park up the car and get ready to let loose in one of New Orleans’ riotous jazz bars.

The Blue Ridge Parkway

Get in touch with your wild side on a one-way trip through the dense forests of the Blue Ridge Parkway, known for its stunning natural beauty.

A combination of rolling mountain ranges and lush forests make this drive one of America’s scenic greats. Be sure to check out the panoramic views from Waterrock Knob, as well as the pretty town of Little Switzerland and the Blue Ridge Music Centre at Milepost 213.

With towering trees on either side of the road, the route is especially spectacular during autumn, as the foliage turns from deep green to fiery orange, yellow and red. The route starts in Virginia and finishes in North Carolina, spanning over 400-miles of brooding wilderness – it’s perfect for a one-way car hire trip where getting lost in the wild isn’t such a bad thing.

The Road to Nowhere

Only the most adventurous souls are drawn to the ominously-named Road to Nowhere, a route that takes in some of America’s greatest and wildest country.

Pick up your one-way rental car in North Dakota before embarking on a near-dead-straight ride straight down to Mexico. Beware, this route cuts through some of the US’s vastest grasslands in Nebraska and Kansas – you might not see another soul for hours on end.

The deeper into the drive you get, the more of the old Wild West you’ll see, passing cattle stations, deserts and time-warp towns as you go. Spanning a whopping 1,894 miles, the route effectively splits the US in half and passes through Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota.

Orlando to Miami drive

Load the kids in the back and get ready to explore America’s premium theme park paradise on this road trip that takes in some of Florida’s greatest sights and cities.

Start your trip in Orlando with some white-knuckle theme park rides, then drive down to Cape Canaveral’s Kennedy Space Center. After that, it’s straight down to Miami and the gorgeous Florida Keys.

Make the most of your USA one-way car rental and swing by the Everglades for some croc hunting, before plunging into the crystal clear waters of Key Lago for some scuba diving.
