Hiring a car in Almeria city centre

It’s possible to pick up a good deal on a rental car once you reach the centre of Almeria. You’ll find a choice of local and international car hire brands conveniently positioned near Almeria station if you’re arriving from another city by train.

Driving in Almeria city centre

Almeria is less busy and smaller than a lot of other tourist cities in Spain. This, along with its well-maintained roads, makes it a pleasure to explore by car. If you’re picking up your vehicle from the airport, you’ll travel along the AL-12 motorway, which can get busy during commuter times as you approach the city.

When exploring the city, you might find that the streets become quite narrow in Almeria’s historic centre. One-way roads can also make navigating tricky so if you have an exact attraction in mind, try to map out a route beforehand to save time and stress.

Parking spaces in Almeria during the busier summer season are sometimes hard to spot, however you’ll find several car parks with decent prices off Avenue Federico Garcia Lorca.

Recommended day trips from Almeria

Aguadulce

Driving time: 15 minutes

Just west of Almeria lies the coastal town of Aguadulce, a popular beach resort with an abundance of beautiful Moorish architecture. Its 2.5km (1.5 mile) long urban beach is one of the most picturesque in the region, and a marina area nearby offers plenty of opportunities for water sports as well as a lively nightlife scene.

Tabernas

Driving time: 30 minutes

If you head slightly inland from Almeria, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stumbled straight into a Spaghetti Western. That’s because the area around the town of Tabernas is the only desert in Europe and a popular filming location that’s appeared in many Clint Eastwood classics. In addition to Mini Hollywood, an American Wild West theme park and studio, you’ll also find the distinctive ruins of the Moorish Tabernas Castle high on a hill overlooking the town.

Granada

Driving time: Two hours

Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, around two hours’ drive from Almeria, sits historic Granada, a city that truly is one of Andalucía’s treasures. Its main attraction is the heavenly Alhambra Palace with its terraces and tiles that was once the seat of the Spanish royal family. While an old city, Granada also has a lively contemporary social scene with tapas bars hidden down cobbled alleys and flamenco clubs aplenty.

Three tips on driving in Almeria

  1. In Almeria, and other towns and cities in Spain, the speed limit is always 50km/h (30mph) or less. If you’re caught speeding, you’ll face an on the spot fine.
  2. If you’re heading out of Almeria along the coast, watch out for toll roads. Motorways marked as AP (Autopista Peaje) instead of just A are always tolled.
  3. Spanish law requires you to carry two warning triangles and a reflective jacket at all times in your vehicle. Make sure you check in advance that your car hire company provides them.
