Montenegro tops the list for October savings compared to September

If you’ve been waiting until the prices and crowds of peak summer have decreased to book your sunny escape, you’re likely now debating whether you should travel in September or save more with an October getaway.

Well, wonder no more. We’ve crunched the numbers to reveal the top spots where you can save the most by pushing your trip back to October. In fact, even though there are plenty of destinations that are hot in October, average prices for some plunge by nearly £300 per person compared with September for a seven-night break. For a couple, that’s up to £600 saved – enough for an additional weekend away too. Clever.

But it doesn't work everywhere. Our research also found that some destinations are actually pricier in October. So, read on for the places where you can find bargains in October – and where to avoid.

Top destinations for October savings

1. Montenegro

Saving in October vs September: £291pp

Aerial view of a fortified old town on a pretty promontory in MontenegroAerial view of a fortified old town on a pretty promontory in Montenegro

Combining dramatic medieval towns with towering mountain peaks, this stunning Balkan country on the Adriatic Sea takes our top spot for savings in October. Montenegro tops our list with average holiday prices per person falling from £935 in September to £644 in October; that’s a massive saving of £291 per person.

Temperatures do fall, from an average daily maximum of 27⁰C in September to 21⁰C in October, but that’s still markedly warmer than a week in Blighty.

Neighbouring Croatia and just across the sea from Italy, you can expect Venetian harbour towns, crystal-clear water, striking cliff-backed beaches and incredible lakes and mountains. So far, Montenegro has remained under the average holidaymakers’ radar, so get there before its well and truly on the tourist map.

2. Croatia

Saving in October vs September: £251pp

It’s fitting that neighbouring Croatia happens to enjoy the second biggest savings on our list, with prices down an average of £251 per person to £512 per person for a seven-night holiday in October. Weather-wise, temperatures drop from an average daily maximum of 25⁰C to 19⁰C and an average of ten days with some rainfall to 12. So, it is the weather you’re paying for.

However, 19⁰C is still plenty warm enough to visit Croatia’s famed sites, from Dubrovnik’s fortress-like Old Town and Split’s Diocletian's Palace to the turquoise waters of Plitvice Lakes National Park. Or for dips in the sea and long meals on pretty patios. If you’re after a more active break, it’s an ideal time to visit.

3. Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza takes the third spot for savings with an average price drop of £242 per person to £686 per person for a week’s getaway. And, if you’re heading to the White Isle for its scenery, boho charm and a more relaxed vibe over its mega-clubs and nightlife, then this is a particularly lovely time to visit.

The summer and party-led crowds will have dispersed with the mega-clubs usually hosting their season closing parties in early October, but temperatures still sit at an average daily high of 23⁰C. Explore pine-fringed coves, a UNESCO-listed Old Town and dip in some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean.

4. Kos, Greece

Saving in October vs September: £240pp

If it’s a Greek island break you’re after, look no further. Kos is fourth for savings, with average prices per person falling £240 to £687 per person for a week’s escape.

Many visitors head straight to the island’s renowned coastline, with beaches that range from long stretches of golden sand to shingle coves lapped by turquoise water. Things stay toasty into October too, with average daily maximums of 24⁰C compared to September’s 28⁰C, so it’s still definitely beach weather.

Try your hand at wind or kitesurfing too, or use the milder weather to take some scenic hikes across tree-covered mountain peaks, coastal paths or ancient ruins.

5. Malta

Malta follows in fifth place, down an average of £222 per person to £567 per person for a week in the sun.

As with Kos, you don’t have to compromise too much on the weather by delaying your trip either. Average daily maximums fall from 28⁰C throughout September to a lovely 24⁰C in October. However, be aware there is a greater chance of rain. While September sees on average four days of rain, October has ten.

If you do get some drizzle, there’s still plenty to do. Besides its beautiful beaches, wander historic Valletta. Malta’s UNESCO-listed capital is the former stronghold of the Knights of St John and is a warren of golden alleys, top-notch restaurants, towering churches and pretty shops.

6. Santorini, Greece

Saving in October vs September: £200pp

Santorini sneaks in at sixth place with an average saving of £200 per person, bringing prices for a week’s escape to £566. So, if you’ve been dreaming of watching a sunset from its stunning caldera edge, wandering alleyways of blue and white domed churches and picturesque houses, or basking in infinity pools that seem to meet the sky, now is a great time to do it all.

Temperatures cool a little from 25⁰C in September to 22⁰C in October, but for the slight drop off in heat, you’ll make a massive saving and will avoid the late summer crowds too. Not a bad pay off!

Saving in October vs September: £176pp

A holiday in Turkey is always a good idea. And it's the country’s Bodrum area that ranks seventh for October value, with prices an average of £176 per person cheaper at £535 per person for a week’s relaxation.

From the charming city of Bodrum itself with its beaches, bazaars and sun-bleached ruins, there’s the wider Turquoise Coast to explore. As the name suggests, this scenic 100km (620-mile) stretch of coastline on the southwestern and southern shores of Turkey fronts the glittering blue waters of both the Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean Sea.

Around Bodrum, take a trip on wooden gulet boats and explore quiet villages along the peninsula. Expect daily maximums of 24⁰C and just five days of rain across the month.

Temperatures here reach a daily average maximum of 19⁰C in October and stay pretty dry with just four days of rainfall across the month. Located on the eastern edge of Bulgaria, where the land meets the Black Sea, Bourgas is a port city that has everything you could want from a holiday. Golden beaches? Check. Great hotels? Check. Halkidiki offers great value in October with seven-night holiday prices down an average of £165 per person to £503 per person. And for a trip to this idyllic three-fingered forested peninsula in northern Greece, that’s a steal.

Known for its drop-dead scenery, crystal-clear Aegean waters and Blue Flag beaches, this unspoiled coastline is where you come to truly switch off. It’s still 20⁰C in October, versus an average daily maximum of 25⁰C in September, so pleasant beach weather. All you’ll have to do is choose your ‘finger’. Kassandra is known for its characterful stone towns, child-friendly resorts and white-sand beaches, while middle finger Sithonia is greener and less developed.

Where travelling in October will cost you more

Not every destination gets cheaper, though. Some are more expensive in October, and these five see the biggest increases.

Cape Verde sees the biggest jump, with average prices per person rising £288 to £1,158. Mauritius is up an average of £219 per person to £1,716 and Egypt costs an average of £108 more per person at £924. Fuerteventura rises by an average of £92 per person to £671, while Gran Canaria is up an average of £76 per person to £743. If you fancy any of these destinations, a September getaway would be the smarter pick.
