Of all the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is perhaps one the most pleasantly surprising. Along with gorgeous beaches, fantastic resorts and a nightlife for all tastes, you’ll find mesmeric volcanic landscapes, amazing wineries and, courtesy of the late artist César Manrique, wonderful public art. If it’s a classic beach break you’re after, look to rent a villa near to one of Lanzarote’s three main resorts.
First up is Puerto del Carmen. Located in the south, it’s the oldest, largest and most popular resort on the island, and much loved by families, couples, groups of friends and retirees alike. Check out Avenida de las Playas and El Varadero harbour.
Next, in the south east, you’ve got Costa Teguise, Lanzarote’s most ‘resorty’ of resorts. Book a villa here if you’re keen on a cheap, cheerful and fuss-free experience. Playa de las Cucharas is one of the highlights.
Finally, you’ve got the southernmost Playa Blanca. Altogether smaller and quieter than Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise, it is, nevertheless, just as much fun.
If you opt for a villa close to this resort, a day trip to Montana Roja – the Red Mountain – is highly recommended.
Beyond the island’s famous resorts, which also includes the more exclusive Puerto Calero, other top destinations for a villa holiday include Lanzarote’s petite and pleasant capital Arrecife in the south and the charming Caleta de Famara in the north (which is especially popular with surfers).
For a more secluded stay, consider a villa in and around Yaiza and La Asomada, both of which are close to Timanfaya National Park. If you opt for villa away from the coast, remember to look for one with a private pool – you’ll be thankful for it in those sweltering summer months!
Or, for a more authentic experience of Canarian life on the island, opt for a villa in Tías, a wonderful historic town that is within easy reach of Puerto del Carmen.
Finally, do note that wherever you end up staying in Lanzarote you can still easily explore the rest of the small island with a hire car. For more, check out our car hire page here.
