Krakow This Polish city is one of the cheapest places to fly to this winter.

With accommodation and flight prices at their most competitive, winter is a fantastic time to score a cheap holiday. But the million dollar question is: where’s cheapest to visit this year?

We’ve done the maths at TravelSupermarket HQ to reveal the cheapest winter holiday destinations departing from UK airports, considering both three-night city breaks and weeklong winter sun getaways.

Whether you’re taking off from London or Leeds, here’s where to go this winter for sightseeing and sunbathing on the cheap.

The cheapest destinations from London airports

Flying from one of London’s major airports? Krakow is your cheapest destination for a city break, averaging just £223pp for a three-night stay. With beautiful Christmas markets and hearty fare, it's a tough one to beat for festive feels.

In second place, Rome comes in at £265pp, closely followed by Budapest at £281pp. If there was a prime time to see their most magnificent landmarks without the crowds, winter would be it.

Any sun seekers will want to make a beeline for Alanya. Costing £304pp on average for a seven-night getaway, and with winter highs hovering in the high teens, this Turquoise Coast resort hits the spot for both budget and weather.

Tunisia’s package holiday favourite, Port el Kantaoui, is the next cheapest winter sun destination from London, followed by St Paul's Bay in Malta. A week’s holiday will set you back £354pp and £384pp respectively.

The cheapest destinations from Manchester Airport

Krakow keeps its lead as a budget-friendly short break for those flying from Manchester, with three nights averaging £253pp.

Prague is no stranger to a cheap city break round-up (largely thanks to its cheap pints and accommodation), so it’s no surprise that it slides into Manchester’s second cheapest spot, costing £278pp on average. Budapest, in third, just tips over the £300pp mark.

Seeking sun instead? Benalmadena is your best bet for a cheap sunshine hit. You’ll pay around £365pp for a seven-night holiday – an absolute steal for one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular beach resorts. You’ll find great value deals to Sousee and Agadir from Manchester too, both blissfully warm over winter thanks to their North African climate.

The cheapest destinations from Liverpool Airport

Take off on a city break from Liverpool this winter and you’ll get the most for your money in Budapest. Coming in at £202pp, it's the cheapest UK airport to fly to the Hungarian capital, costing £50pp less than Manchester – well worth the 30-minute drive between airports!

Prague is the second cheapest (£373pp) while Amsterdam slides into third (£393pp). Whether you go for the cosy cafes, canals or Christmas lights, Amsterdam and winter city breaks are a well-matched pair.

St Julian’s in Malta is your winter sun winner from Liverpool. It’s a tourist favourite, especially as it averages £258pp for seven nights.

The sunshine and cheap deals continue in Alvor, where you’ll pay just over £400pp. Tenerife follows suit, with Puerto de la Cruz in third. Granted, it’s almost £100pp more expensive than the Algarve at £503pp, but with some of the warmest winter temperatures in Europe, it’s worth it.

The cheapest destinations from Newcastle Airport

There’s little between the three cheapest city destinations if you’re flying from Newcastle. Paris, Krakow and Amsterdam all offer budget-friendly deals around £350pp, with the City of Lights coming in at £320pp on average. Seeing the Eiffel Tower twinkling beneath a starry winter sky is definitely one for the bucket list.

Any Geordies looking to top up their tan should concentrate their holiday search on Spain. Fuengirola is the cheapest winter sun destination, and by some margin too. A week’s getaway to this Costa del Sol hotspot will cost you about £354pp on average. Its long, golden beaches are blissfully empty in the low season, ideal if you’re after some peace and quiet following Christmas.

Two Canary Islands complete the top three, with Puerto de la Cruz coming in at £528pp and Puerto del Carmen costing £674pp. You’ll find plenty of sunshine and sangria in all three.

The cheapest destinations from Leeds Airport

Leeds Airport flyers will also find that Krakow is the best option for a cheap city break this winter. The price of a three-night holiday here is similar to Manchester, averaging £274pp (that’s £20 more expensive).

Not far behind, Dublin is your next cheapest pick. With just over an hour’s flight time, a dose of Christmas craic is within easy reach. Budapest rounds up the list once again, coming in around the £400pp mark.

Prefer sun over city? Puerto de la Cruz is your answer. At £522pp, you’ll pay £6pp less than Newcastle but £19pp more than Liverpool to fly to this Tenerife resort from Leeds.

Elsewhere, consider Costa Teguise and Lara for a cheap winter sun trip. The former is a great all-round resort on Lanzarote’s east coast (think multiple beaches, watersports and restaurants), while the latter is home to one of Turkey’s best beaches.

The cheapest destinations from Edinburgh Airport

Prague and Budapest continue to fly the flag for cheap city breaks, being the second and third best options from Edinburgh. But it’s in Italy where you’ll find your cheapest deals.

Book a three-night getaway in Milan and it will cost you just over £250pp on average. If you think the price is attractive, wait until you see the city’s stunning buildings and fashion houses. Winter is a wonderful time to enjoy them without queues or crowds.

Scots seeking a dose of winter sun should opt for Agadir. Located on Morocco’s south coast and sheltered by the Atlas Mountains, it boasts temperatures in the low twenties even in January. Even better? It tops the cheap list at £428pp on average.

Alternatively, look to Puerto del Carmen or Puerto de la Cruz in the Canaries for an affordable week in the sun.

The cheapest destinations from Birmingham Airport

Departing from the Midlands? Your cheapest city break destination from Birmingham Airport this winter is Budapest. Coming in at £289pp, it's only £8pp more expensive than flying from London.

Those looking for a Christmassy break are in luck as Krakow and Berlin are hot on Budapest’s heels. Boasting over 100 Christmas markets, the German capital is a real showstopper in November and December. You can pick up a three-night holiday for around £336pp.

As for cheap winter sun spots, travellers from Birmingham can take their pick from Turkey, Spain and Morocco for a bargain deal. Side takes top spot – a crowd pleaser for its silky soft beaches and incredible ancient sites. Averaging £382pp, it’s substantially cheaper than its neighbour, Lara, which would set you back £565pp for a week’s holiday.

Better value and close behind Side, Benalmadena cruises into second, with Agadir taking the third cheapest spot, just over the £500pp mark.
